Joyride to Florida

Thursday, September 15th, 2005

I know we’re all sick of hearing about joyride. I am especially. But I have to say that I am excited to have my first non-Dobson performance of the piece. The work will be performed by the University High School Wind Ensemble under the direction of Phil Obado way over in Florida. Their concert is set for October 10th, 2005 so if for some reason you’re in Florida, stop on in! Their program will include:

Star Spangled Banner (arr. Stamp)
joyRiDE
Loch Lomond
Chester
Chester Leaps In
Selections from Les Miserables
Nabucco
Stars & Stripes Forever

What a program, huh? Hope the concert goes well–I’ll post some sort of clip if I can get one!

I have a cool TA

Tuesday, September 13th, 2005

So while I’ve been at ASU, I haven’t really met anyone new. Just been hanging around with the same people. While that’s fine and I love my friends, it’s just somewhat depressing that I haven’t met many new people going into the 4th week here. Maybe it’s my tone; maybe it’s my arrogant nature. Anyway, sadly, I think my favorite person at ASU is probably my theory TA, Jeremy Jarvis. He’s just all around a really nice guy, easy to talk to, and his music’s really diverse and really pretty cool. We talked for a while in his office today and he played for me a saxophone quartet he wrote while he was studying back on the East Coast. It’s called “The Turtles of Wrath.” I gotta say, he likes quirky titles as much as I do :-D. Anyway, the piece is in three movements and there are some really cool things Jeremy does orchestrationally (is that a word?).

Anyway, maybe I have said all the wrong things. Maybe I am all the bad things Dr. Shinn and Dr. Rockmaker lecture about. Maybe I need to start over. Maybe I need a second chance.

Party at Joe and Aaron’s

Sunday, September 11th, 2005

Man, last night was a really fun night. Percussionists Joe and Aaron had a back to school party last night at their place and we had a blast! At about 1, the guys busted out their bongos and african drums and sang chants for at least an hour. I won’t mention the body shots…

Other than that, I finally found performers for our composition recital! Mike Fan will accompany on piano (I owe him), Jeff Jones will sing bass/baritone, and Adrienne Turner will sing soprano. It should be a good concert though I hear there are only 5 acts. So come out and enjoy a concert of new music!

Program Notes

Monday, September 5th, 2005

Here are the program notes to the Dahlhouse song cycle:

Roald Dahl is probably best known for his book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His odd flavor of humor sometimes pushes the limit on what is appropriate for children’s poetry. In his anthology, Rhyme Stew , the cover clearly states, “Warning: Unsuitable for Small Readers.” With this in mind, I sought to create a song cycle based on some of this poetry that pushed the envelope even further. The cycle begins with the most legitimate of the three, No Knowing, plagued by a quirky sense of time in 7/8 and a haunting tonality. Hot and Cold, well, let’s just say I kept the door locked for this one. The last song in the cycle qualifies for the asylum. With a mentally unstable Irving Berlin sound and the occasional bang on the piano, you’ll go nuts for The Little Nut-Tree.

Hope to see you at the concert Septemeber 19th. Even more, I hope to have an accompanist.
