The Original Turkey

School started back this week which means inevitably, I’ll have some time on campus to kill. This week, I stopped by the ASU music library (a frightening place…. *shivers*) and did a little research for my piece Turkey in the Straw. As I’ve learned from other research (and good ol’ Wikipedia), the tune was originally set to a minstrel comic song called Zip Coon around 1834. Ironically, the early Turkey in the Straw version (1905) is much more racist than the Zip Coon version (in my opinion, at least). So this has been my inspiration… not the racist part (”Oh, how I know a nigga do love turkey! Mmm!!”)…. the comic part….. not that racism is funny….. unless you’re singing about it in Avenue Q…… then it’s pretty funny.

And racism is always funny sir. There is nothing more absurd than racism. Kind of like bums are funny but poverty isn’t. It all depends on what you are looking at. For rizzle.
